Site Visit:
A few things really drew my eye when observing the site, apart from the obviously intriguing drastic level changes of the site. Firstly, the front façade on Victoria Street; the current building obviously does not embrace it’s surroundings or connect at all to the terraces on either side. However, what I was interested in was the way in which I could break this façade to explore Gehry’s ideas of a broken exterior public/private barrier. Furthermore, I hope to create a small sculpture/natural garden on the site and so I sketched the front façade to explore how I could possibly follow these ideas whilst connecting to the contrasting terraces on either side. Secondly, the view from the middle of the Butler Stairs presents an interesting secondary access point of public connection. Despite the public not being able to reach the site from the South Side, this view plays a very important role in merging the public and private spheres. Finally, the rock wall face that runs approximately west-east at the back of the site provides an interesting opening to the history of this landscape and I hope to explore the channel that this rock face creates in order to bring the design into the landscape.
