The first model I have ever made was definately a challenge and a big learning experience. The lesson was split into 3 tasks, each building upon the task before. The first two tasks were to take the basic shape of a steroetypical house and model it in different materials (Balsa Wood and Whitecard), the second house needing to have three openings. The 3rd Task involved the combination of these two models, using the openings created in the second task. In completing this task I learnt a lot about the basics of model making; i learnt I should be very careful with measurements and cuts as my lack of careful attention led to gaps and erros in the joins.
Take Home:
The Take home task for week 1 presentated a huge challenge in terms of my model making ability. Having completed the 'In Class' task i felt slightly more confident with the manipulation and use of balsa wood, however recieving this task at the en of the lesson i felt totally unprepared. The task proved very challenging, and I had to restart the entire model on a few occasions, however this taught me the importance of planning the model and the way in which it was to be constructed. This task involved making a full and detailed model of the Barcelona Pavilion by Mies Van Der Rohe. There are wo main things i learnt from the construction of this model, firstly the importance of the site in terms of a model and a design. On experiencing feedback and studying other peoples models in week 2 I realised the improvement in communication due to modeling the setting. Furthermore, after doing a lot of research about the Barcelona Pavilion i was interested in the flowing nature of the space and the floating sensation of the roof. I tried to communicate this experience through making the glass panels smaller and raising the roof above the walls through small stands. However, i realised on closer inspection and having been given feedback that both of these alterations changed the interpretation of the design and were therefore a poor decision. In future, to suggest experiences within a model, less literal communications need to be made.
