Montage It! Week 1

Model:

This workshop provided a big challenge to me due to the freedom it encouraged and allowed. I chose "Aldikatu II" by Eduardo Chillida as the inspiration for my model design as I drew from it the interesting connection between positive and negative space. I aimed to translate this idea into my conceptual model through the designs connection to my chosen sight: Waverley Cemetery. The main idea behind my design was the interlocking of landscape and design, I aimed for my design to fit inside the landscape, with both the landscape defining the design and also the design to define the landscape in a symbiotic relationship of equal dominance. I chose wire mesh to explore this idea in model form, with the balsa wood forming the frame of the model for the wire to be wrapped around. However, I hit my first issue as the first wire I bought was too strong and tough, but this issue was solved through advice from my tutors to by "tyre wire". The result I was aiming to achieve was one where the design formed out of the underneath of the cliff face, falling out past the traditional boundaries to further connect with the water and waves below.

This original model however proved to be ineffective in representing a cascading rock face and also was very blocky and ineffective when attempted to be connected and montaged within the landscape. In response to this I decided to both flip the model upside down to highlight the contour-like effect I achieved on the ground and also to remove the balsa wood frame.
