Submission
I design a studio and
gallery for the sculptor/artist Simon Mcgrath and his hypothetical family. The
design is based around a splitting of the site into two distinct regions to
provide a separate space from Simon to work as well as private living quarters.
Furthermore, this splitting aimed to connect with the structure of Sydney as a city; growing out from the central ‘void’
harbour. The site provides excellent views of the city as it is located on a
ridgeline that runs along Victoria Street; this creates many opportunities of majestic
Western views as well as also creating interesting height and level possibilities.
My design also responded to Gehry’s house through exterior wrapping elements, a
void (gallery) element on the western side of the house and interesting
explorations of the nature of a household boundary. Finally, the materials used
related to a renewal, or stripping back of the original site as well as a
sandstone development to relate to the rocky ground and finally recycled wood.
Model
A 1:500 model to be placed in the group site model, a 1:100 model showing the
site and the house in section as well as a closer 1:50 model showing the gallery/studio in section
